Bill Mastro is a key figure in the sports memorabilia industry’s evolution from sleepy hobby to a billion-dollar industry. For more than a decade, Mastro and his Mastro Auctions dominated the hobby. Mastro brought a sense of professionalism to the hobby – his company was among the first to offer online auctions and his slickly produced catalogues were collector’s items themselves. By the mid-2000s, Mastro Auctions was pulling in about $50 million a year in gross sales.

But it all came crashing down after the FBI launched an investigation in 2006 that focused on shill bidding and the sale of bogus sports and historic memorabilia. Mastro Auctions went out of business in 2009 as a federal grand jury in Chicago examined evidence and three years Mastro and two associates – Doug Allen and Mark Theotikos -- were charged with fraud in a 14-count indictment. The indictment not only claimed Mastro had engaged in shill bidding, but had also knowingly sold bogus items, including a trimmed rare and valuable T206 Honus Wagner card and fake Elvis Presley hair.

Michael O’Keeffe of the Daily News sports investigation team talked this week with New York attorney Jeffrey Lichtman, who is not only a well-regarded lawyer and radio host but also an avid baseball card collector. Jeff has represented a variety of industry executives and others who have been involved in the case against Bill Mastro, who pleaded guilty to one count of fraud in 2013 and will be sentenced August 20 in Chicago federal court.

With each stellar start by Jacob deGrom, the debate among Mets fans gets even more heated: Who would you rather have start a one-game playoff, deGrom or Matt Harvey?

For MLB Network host and former player Mark DeRosa, the answer is a no-brainer.

“I don’t think there is any question right now. You’re getting the ball to Jacob deGrom,” said DeRosa, on the latest episode of the Daily News Sports Talk podcast. “I don’t think it’s close.”

DeRosa, a Jersey guy who is the co-host of MLB Central weekdays (10 a.m.) on MLB Network, said he wasn’t trying to slight Harvey, instead take the guy who has been red hot.

“That’s not being anti-Matt Harvey,” said DeRosa. “This guy is fresh off Tommy John. Can we give him a seond? I know he’s the Dark Knight and everyone loves him and wants him to win every ballgame, but the bottom line is he hasn’t been in this league very long, the back of his baseball card is not very extensive; the talent is there. I’d almost take a little pressure off the guy and let him relax a little bit and not make him feel he has to throw a no-hitter every time out there.

“(deGrom) burst onto the scene as Rookie of the Year and he comes out this year throwing even harder,” said DeRosa. “The All-Star Game, he let the world know. I think he woke himself up like ‘I’m this good.’ Right now, it’s deGrom.”

Of course, the Mets have to make the playoffs first and DeRosa thinks Juan Uribe, his former teammate on the 2010 Giants who the Mets acquired in a trade Friday, could be a big key to the team getting to the postseason, not just because of his talent, but also due to his approach.

“He enjoys life, he’s playing in the big leagues. He occassionally goes deep, he plays a Gold Glove third base and he puts team first.”

As for the Yankees, DeRosa said he felt before the season began the Yanks could win the division, but even he didn’t see Alex Rodriguez having such a huge season.

“I’ve liked the Yanks from Day 1,” said DeRosa. “Everything that was a question mark has worked. A-Rod, what he’s doing is borderline crazy.”

But DeRosa said the Yankee starting pitching is what could make the Bombers practically impossible to catch in the AL East.

“If Pineda steps up and pitches like a one down stretch, they will run away with it.

“There is a lot to like about the Yanks.”

We welcomed a special guest to the podcast today: Myron "Mynie" Clayton.

"Mynie" Clayton is better known around the Daily News sports department as "Grandpa." The life-long sports fan, and grandfather of Daily News online sports editor Andy Clayton, is well known in the newsroom for calling the office on a regular basis to quiz his grandson about all the things going on in the sports world.

With the Rangers and Lightning doing battle in an epic Eastern Conference Final, and the Rays being the surprise team in the AL East, we figured now was the perfect time to introduce our podcast audience to our favorite resident of Tampa.

Along with a little hockey talk, we talked to Grandpa (who will be 94 on June 6) about his lifelong love affair with baseball.

How did "Mynie" end up performing at the grand opening of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown? What about that time he worked on a gun for Yankee great Catfish Hunter while working as a custom gunsmith for Remington Arms?

These stories and much more with Grandpa
